Dtyd gets down with: Starfoxxx Chicago

March 23, 2011

We got the chance to talk to Eric and David, 2/3 of Starfoxxx Chicago after their show @ Tiniest Bar in Texas, during SXSW (holllla, yeah they from Chi-town!)

Playing at SXSW for the 2nd time, Starfoxxx said they were pleased to be back in Austin.

Starfoxxx hangs out mostly in the genre of FootWork and Juke, lil’ baile funk too, a little of a lot of things actually (If you don’t know what FootWork is…we didn’t really know before this…it’s a dance, unique to Chicago, similar to Juke).

So what IS Juke? Also birthed in Chicago: juke is played between 150-160 BPM’s, usually lo-fi production aesthetic and a ‘ONE-AND-TWO-AND-FOUR’ bass drum pattern. Ghetto house, booty tech, DJ Funk, DJ Assault derivative type dankness.

Both Dave and Eric attended the Chicago Institute of Art and studied visual media, later discovering they their real interest lay in manipulating sound geared for the dance floor. They GOT the special sauce, using samples all the way from classic disco to early 1950’s pop. Their musical repertoire is mega-impressive and really reflects a unique musical perspective from a younger generation of artists in the world of EDM.

When asked about their favorite piece of equipment…?

The Internet of course. Hands down; being able to acquire new samples, find new music and share their own music with a world-wide audience makes the web the ultimate dj tool. Starfoxxx is incredibly passionate about sharing what they have and more than anything it’s clear they appreciate accessibility to music. Check out their soundcloud, most of their tracks are available for download. REFRESHING, ahhh: free! music.

CHROMEO3 (SHORT EDIT)

Starfoxxx talked about Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, being some of the first visual artists to really make a statement by taking something, altering it, then presenting it as a new and different thing.

Starfoxxx Chicago’s steeze quintessentially embodies ‘that‘ revolutionary remix mentality, they douse tracks from all genres, with their individualized interpretation of juke/footwork/old school house/funk/baile/electro/club & bmore. It’s and new and it’s different. So there.

We can dig Starfoxxx’s fast-paced sound and Juked up track selections. [R.I.P. four loko mix]… Not much to do but get ta stepping.

Keep a lookout for Starfoxxx Chicago, they’ll be back in Austin 4sure; also the upcoming release of 5 new tasty & original tracks + an additional 2 bonus tracks will be available within the near future.

Support Starfoxxx Chicago. Great bunch of guys, ultra rad and they were totally responsive to all of our interview requests and interests. GO Starfoxxx GO!
